Abstract

A series of direct model tests (1/3 and 1/6.6 scale) were conducted under static, fixed pulsating and moving wheel-load to study the effect of deck continuity and reinforcing pattern on the ultimate end fatigue strength of concrete bridge deck slabs supported on steel girders. The failure mode and cracking pattern are identified, and the measured stiffness and steel strain values are discussed. Conclusions regarding the completely different effect of the fixed pulsating load versus that of the moving load, as well as the safety factors at various critical load stages that are drawn, form the basis for recommendations toward improved design criteria for concrete bridge decks.
